Jesus says We should have a Single Purpose

Matthew 6:19-24
19 “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. 21 Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

22 “Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. 23 But when your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!
24 “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.

1. Jesus says, “We should have a Single Treasure”
Philippians 3:7-8 NLT 7 I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. 8 Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ

1 Timothy 6:17-19 NLT 17 Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. 18 Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. 19 By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life.

Matthew 25:35-36 NLT 35 For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. 36 I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’

2. Jesus says, “We should have a Single View”
Matthew 6:22-23 NLT 22 “Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. 23 But when your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!

Do you have a biblical worldview?
Answer the following questions, based on claims found in the Bible and which George Barna used in his survey:
•Do absolute moral truths exist?

•Is absolute truth defined by the Bible?

•Did Jesus Christ live a sinless life?

•Is God the all-powerful and all-knowing Creator of the universe, and does He still rule it today?

•Is salvation a gift from God that cannot be earned?

•Is Satan real?

•Does a Christian have a responsibility to share his or her faith in Christ with other people?

•Is the Bible accurate in all of its teachings?

Psalms 119:105 NLT Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.

3. Jesus says, “We should have a Single Master”

Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.
Did you know that God is jealous for you?

Matthew 22:37 NLT 37 Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’
Revelation 3:14-19 NLT 14 “Write this letter to the angel of the church in Laodicea. This is the message from the one who is the Amen—the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God’s new creation: 15 “I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! 16 But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth! 17 You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. 18 So I advise you to buy gold from me—gold that has been purified by fire. Then you will be rich. Also buy white garments from me so you will not be shamed by your nakedness, and ointment for your eyes so you will be able to see. 19 I correct and discipline everyone I love. So be diligent and turn from your indifference.

We often want our religion to serve our worldly needs in stead of us serving Him.

Joshua 24:15 NLT 15 But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.”

The choice has to be made, who will you serve? The one true God, or the world and all the temporary, failing things it offers.
Ultimately these three single points point towards one single purpose and that is to serve Jesus.
